Sofia Dell’Aversano Orabona was born in Naples in 1984. Drawing and painting first stirred her creativity; later, the immediacy of photography — its capacity to seize time — became the language of her research. Through her images she tells lives suspended between beauty and unease, moving between reality and a poetic dimension.
She trained in graphic design, photography and visual communication, going on to study art and advertising, which broadened her multidisciplinary eye. She later deepened her study of photographic and cinematic language in an academic setting, developing a strong interest in visual storytelling, time and space. Throughout her training she also experimented with audiovisual and cinematic works, without ever abandoning photography, completing her path with a specialization in image and scenic design for film.
Sofia’s photographs are born from a desire to paint — they seek the same intensity and attention to detail as a hyperrealist or surrealist canvas. Her visual research centers on the idea of place as physical, mental and emotional space. Her practice grows out of slow observation and listening to spaces: places crossed, lost or internalized, never truly possessed, yet capable of generating memory, imagination and reflection — with particular attention to social and anthropological themes.
In her work, light, colour and matter take centre stage, giving rise to essential, silent images and landscapes that move between intimacy and the urban scene, between the pictorial and the metaphysical. The image becomes a perceptual experience rather than a simple representation — a threshold between what is visible and what remains invisible.
She collaborates with artists and professionals across contemporary art, photography, film and sculpture. Winner of national and international awards, she exhibits in private galleries and public exhibition spaces, and teaches photography and visual communication at university level.

Behind the camera, Sofia’s process begins with slow observation — listening to a space before ever making an image. The same patience carries into the studio, on location, and at every exhibition install.

“In Sofia Dell’Aversano Orabona’s images, space stops working as a mere container and becomes a mental experience, a place of suspension where time slows until it is almost imperceptible. […] Photography becomes an exercise in attention, an invitation to pause, to recognise the beauty that emerges when time stops running and space allows itself to be inhabited.”
Francesca Anita Gigli
Critical text, Olympic Art — Milan, 2026
“Sofia Dell’Aversano Orabona photographs concepts. Her work is a search balanced between inside and outside, before and after, life and death, running along the common thread of her artistic discourse: time.”
Il Denaro
“L’essenziale della foto? C’è ma non si vede”, March 2012
“Sofia is a tireless traveller, in body and soul, but above all an artist able to place life within the dream and to make the dream an expansion of seeing — a seeing that knows how to see, widening every narrow horizon and calling it by its true name: contemplation.”
Pasquale Lettieri
Art critic and historian, Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli
“Sofia Dell’Aversano Orabona brings every object and person back to sentimental geometries, forever poised in balance […] opening almost cinematic glimpses of the city.”
Daniela Ricci
Il Mattino, “Fuori dal buio”, December 2021
“She does not interpret what she sees. She brings it before our eyes. […] The challenge Sofia sets with her work is to give the idea great freedom, in order to represent the inaccessible essence of things.”
